HANGING IN CHAFFEE

While not one of our proudest moments, it nevertheless is part of our history.

We are attempting to gather information regarding the facts behind this photo

The above photo was loaned to the Chaffee Historical Society

by Anna Claney Williams (Summer 2002)

Tip Received 8/2002.....We have received some information about this hanging.  It was supposed to have occurred in 1922, during the time of the National Railroad Strike.   The railroad had hired replacement workers to replace those on strike, those replacement workers were referred to as "Scabs" by the striking workers.   Our information is that the subject of the above photo was forcibly removed from the hotel in Chaffee (by several men) and hanged.   Law enforcement was unable to gather sufficient evidence to bring any suspects to trial.

Disclaimer:  The Chaffee Historical Society is unable to confirm the above information, but we suspect that it is true.
