Liza Abbott, 85 years old, died July 30, 1969. She was born Oct. 1, 1978 in Tennessee to Robert & Elizabeth Humphreys Akers.

She is survived by one sister, Mrs. Ben (Eva) Sanders of IL

Funeral will be held Saturday, August 1, 1964 at Assembly of God Church in Chaffee by Rev. Wm. H. Marshall. Burial will be in Union Park Cemetery.

Body is at Bisplinghoff Funeral Home.

Funeral services for James L. Abbott, 79 years old, a former police judge and justice of the peace, and concrete worker, who was found dead in his room at the residence of George Knowlton at 3 o'clock the afternoon of May 16 by Mrs. Knowlton, were held that night from the Bisplinghoff Funeral Home with Rev. W. E. Waddell, pastor of the Christian Church, in charge. Interment was in Union Park Cemetery. Coroner Clyde Poe, who was called here, pronounced death due to a heart attack. Mr. Abbott was born August 12, 1865, and was married to Miss Elizabeth Akers on November 17, 1897. She passed away a number of years ago. They had one daughter, Naomi Blanche, who died in infancy. Mr. Abbott had resided in Chaffee for the past 38 years and was the first person to build a sidewalk here.

 

 

 

ABERNATHY, LEONA J

Leona J. Schearf Abernathy, 51, of Sikeston, formerly of Chaffee, Mo., passed away Feb. 18, 2007, at her home, after a year of battling cancer.

She was born May 12, 1955, in Cape Girardeau, daughter of Lloyd H. and Onita Stone Schearf.

Abernathy was co-owner and general manager of Ryan's Family Steak House in Sikeston. She was a member of First Baptist Church in Chaffee.

Survivors include a daughter, Shelly L. (Barry) Spear of Benton, Mo.; her parents of Chaffee; her twin sister, Gayla S. Schearf of Sikeston; and two grandchildren, Tierra D. Frederick and Morea L. Spear of Benton.

Friends may call at Amick-Burnett Funeral Chapel in Chaffee after 4 p.m. today.

The funeral will at the Amick-Burnett Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. Cliff Day officiating. Burial will be in Union Park Cemetery in Chaffee.

Lester Acey

Lester Acey, age 55, died June 19, 1993. He was born October 11, 1937 in Chaffee to Louie Benjamin and Sadie Eldridge Acey. He married Pansey Justine Tuttleton on March 23, 1957.He drove a truck for Danny Glider Inc.

He is survived by his wife, son Lester Acey, daughter; Sherry Dirnberger, a brother James Acey and two sisters; Charlene Hollis & Lee Price.

He was a member of First Christian Church in Chaffee.

Louie Benjamin Acey

Louie B. Acey, age 69, died June 7, 1973 at Chaffee General Hospital. He was born March 23, 1904 in IL son of Henry Clarence and Rebecca Jane Hensley Acey. At the time of his death he resided at 322 W. Davidson.

On January 10, 1931 he married Miss Sadie Eldridge of Chaffee who preceded him in death on Oct 29, 1939.

He was employed by Frisco Railway Company in the Freight Department for 9 years and for the next 13 years worked as a night watchman at Sports Specialty Shoe Company retiring in 1966.

Survivors include two son James H. and Lester, two daughters Mrs. Bill Hollis and Mrs. George Price, one brother, Earl and four sisters, Mrs. Willard Smith, Mrs. Maude Gray, Mrs. Louise Livingston and Mrs. Bessie Livingston and eight grandchildren.

Bessie Adelia Adams

Bessie Adams, age 80, died June 22, 1984. She was born September 26. 1903 in Marston, MO to Wallace Warren and Emma Nancy Downing Campbell. She married Elmer Adams on August 29, 1922. He died on January 20, 1972

She is survived by a son O’Neal Adams, brother Wm. W. Campbell and a sister Helen Hudson.

She worked at Sports Specialty Shoe Co., was  a member of First Baptist Church in Chaffee. She resided at 312 N. Third.

 

    Chloe Adams

Chloe Adams died March 6, 1993 at the Chaffee Nursing Center.

She was born September 20, 1902 in Cape, daughter of Jacob and Lou Seabaugh Slinkard.

Adams owned and operated the Koffe Kup Restaurant and Bakery for a number of years.

Surviving is a niece, Earlene Schermerhorn of Elk Grove, CA.

Gravesite rites were held at Fairview Methodist Cemetery near Burfordville, MO with Rev. Tom Morris officiating.

Elmer Monroe Adams

Elmer Monroe Adams, age 72, died January 20, 1972 at  Chaffee General Hospital.  He was born September 20, 1899 in Portageville, MO to James & Mary Bruce Adams. He resided at 312 North Third.

He married Miss Bessie Campbell of Chaffee on August 22, 1922.

He was employed by Sports Specialty Shoe Company from 1945 to 1962.

He is survived by a son O’Neal Adams of Chaffee, one son O’Dell preceded him in death in 1926. He is also survived by three half-brothers, Muriel, James and Clyde Adams, two half sisters Mrs. Clara Hawkins & Mrs. Janetta Gammon.

He was a member of First Baptist Church in Chaffee.

 

 

J. A. Adams

Missourian-1950

James A. Adams, 65 years old collapsed and died at 9 a.m. Wednesday of last week while helping his foster son, John Tackett of near Blomeyer load hogs in a truck.

Mr. Adams, who had high blood pressure, had loaded two hogs at his nearby farm and had gone to the son’s house for two others. It was while putting them in the truck that he slumped over.

The son secured help from George Lansmon, who farms nearby, and who came here for a physician. The latter found Mr. Adams dead on arrival.   Mr. Adams was born near Dongola, Dec. 26, 1885, and resided there until his marriage in 1905 to Miss Minnie Burchett. They moved to Brownwood, MO for a time and then moved to West Memphis, AR. In 1922 they came here and operated a grocery store until 1936 when they purchased a farm near Blomeyer.

Services were held at the General Baptist Church here Saturday afternoon and interment was made in Memorial Park Cemetery with Stubbs in charge of services.

Surviving are Mrs. Adams, the foster son, Mr. Tackett, six sisters, Mrs. Lonzo Roberts & Mrs. B. E. Rose of Chaffee, Mrs. Edith Pullman of Indiana, Mrs. Jess Corbin of Idalia, Mrs. Arlie McKinen of St. Louis and Mr. L. B. Morrow of Dexter, a brother, Archie Adams of Memphis and two grandchildren.

Jeremy Adams infant son of Raymond and Linda Lee Carver died September 22, 1985. He was born September 16, 1985.

Mrs. Mahaley Adams, aged 67, died at her home here last Thursday, February 13th, following a stroke of paralysis a few days before. The deceased was born in Tennessee County, TN, September 24, 1862. Her husband preceded her in death, he having passed away about eight years ago. Funeral services were held at her home church, the Baptist, at Idalia, last Friday afternoon, and interment was made in Bluff Cemetery there. The deceased is survived by nine children, J. A. Adams, Archie Adams and Minnie Roberts of this city, May Rose of Detroit, MI, Edith Pullum of Remington, IN, Lou Corbin of Bloomfield, Della McKinnon of St. Louis, Opal Adams of St. Louis and Dewey Adams of this city.

Cora Ahlsted (Upton)

Cora Ahlsted died January 20, 1967 at Cape Osteopathic Hospital in Cape. She was 80 years old. She was born March 1, 1886 at Gainsville, MO to Pink and Margaret Hunter Upton. At the time of her death she resided at 418 Helen Avenue in Chaffee.

She married Richard T. Ahlsted of Gainsville, Mo in 1914. He preceded her in death July 6, 1924. They moved to Chaffee in 1924.

She is survived by a son Robert Elwood of St. Louis, MO three sisters, Mrs. Elsie Brown, Springfield, MO Mrs. Agnes Chatham. and Mrs. Nora McGinnis.

She was a member of the Methodist Church in Gainesville, Mo.

Gus Aiello

Gus Aiello, age 69, died September 13, 1984. He was born March 7, 1915 in Bryan, TX to Stephen and Madeline Provinsana Aiello. He married Sybol Marie Hindman on April 12, 1947.

He is survived by his wife, a son; Harry Aiello, brothers; Sam and Stephen Aiello and a sister; Mrs. Francis Anderson.

He was a welder for Midwest Alloys Corp. in St. Louis.

 

Sybol Aiello

Sybol Aiello, age 74, died August 10, 1999 at Chaffee Nursing Center.

She was born January 15, 1925, at Brownwood, daughter of Harry Ledus and Ruby Mae Hopkins Hindman. She and Gus Aiello were married April 12, 1947, in St. Louis. He died September 13, 1984.

Aiello was a key punch operator at McDonnell Douglas in St. Louis retiring in 1981. She was a member of First Baptist Church in Chaffee.

Survivors include a son, Harry Aiello of Florissant; two sisters, Betty Halter of Chaffee, Twila Hanson of Florissant; two grandchildren; and a great-granddaughter.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, a sister, and a half brother

Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Amick-Burnett Funeral Chapel in Chaffee. The Rev. Watis Harrell will officiate. Burial will be in Union Park Cemetery.

Friends may call at the chapel after 1 p.m. Friday.

AKERS, KATHLEEN
Kathleen Akers, 77, of Cape Girardeau died Sunday, July 29, 2001, at Royal Jubilee Hospital in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada.
She was born Jan. 13, 1924, at Sesser, Ill., daughter of Arnold and Luella Hagle Rowark.
Akers was a secretary at DLH Services Inc., retiring earlier this year. She was a member of First United Methodist Church in Chaffee, Mo.
Survivors include two sisters, Elizabeth McFerron of Chaffee, Bess Sheibley of Elkhart, Ind.; several nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Ford and Sons Mt. Auburn Chapel. The Rev. Marty Blakey will officiate.

He is survived by his wife and a brother Walter G. Alcoke.

Allen, Mrs. A. J.

Mrs. A.J. Allen, 75 years old, died at the family home in Chaffee.  She had been an invalid for many years.

Born January 26, 1878 at Crump, MO., she was the former Miss Rhoda Elizabeth Crump, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Crump.  To her fireinds she was known as Betty.  She was married September 10, 1905 to Mr. Allen of Laflin.  They moved to Chaffee in 1915 and he opened a blacksmith shop.  She was a member of Old Bethlehem General Baptist Church of Crump.

She leaves her husband; a son Nelson Allen of St. Louis; a daughter, Miss Opal Allen of Chaffee; a brother, Dee Crump of Cape and five grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted at Bisplinghoff Funeral Home by Rev. Claude Fowler, assisted by Rev. Paul Tibbs.  Burial will be in the Crump Cemetery.

Nancy A. Allen, 81 years old, died at 10 o'clock Saturday night at her home on North Fifth Street following a long illness. The body was taken to the Stubbs Funeral Home and then returned to the family home. Funeral services were conducted at 2 o'clock Tuesday afternoon at the Christian Church, with Rev. R. M. Talbert, pastor of the Christian Church at Sikeston, in charge. Burial was made in Union Park Cemetery. Mrs. Allen was born in Fulton, TN, February 24, 1863. The family resided there for a while and then moved to Grand Chain, IL. She was married in 1879 to John Little, who succumbed in 1882. She was then married to J. W. Allen, who died here in 1927. She had been a member of the Christian Church since 1888, and had resided in Chaffee for 37 years. She is survived by four sons, R. W. Little of Hurst, IL, Rolla and Charles G. Allen of St. Louis and Joe J. Allen of San Antonio, TX; two daughters, Mrs. Clark Hudson of St. Louis and Miss Prussia Allen of Chaffee, and a brother, Aaron Culbertson of Chaffee.

Alley, Francis Laura

Word was received of the death of Frances L Alley, 95 years old, on January 27, 1971 in Eureka.  Her husband, Dr. Elwood Alley, preceded her in death.

Dr. and Mrs. Alley were pioneer citizens of Chaffee and charter members of First Methodist Church in Chaffee.  She was the last surviving charter member of the church.

Dr. Alley, one of the early dentists in Chaffee, was a partner in the Wright-Alley Hardware Store and served Chaffee as postmaster for many years.  He served on the church's first Board of Stewards and was its first Sunday School Superintendent.

She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Calvin Bowersox of Eureka, and Mrs. Bill Beeler of Hemet, CA.

Services were conducted at the Parker-Aldrich Funeral Home in Webster Groves, MO.  Burial was in the Park Lawn Cemetery there.

 

   

Alley, Elwood

Elwood Alley, 81 years old, formerly of Chaffee, passed away January 29, 1946, in St. Louis.  He was born October 27, 1864 in Spencer, IN.

He and Mrs. Frances Alley were married September 24, 1896.

 

   

Allison, Esta

Esta Viola Allison, 89, of Chaffee died (1982) at Delta Community Hospital in Sikeston.

She was born February 10, 1893 at Anna, IL, to the late Elmer Benjamin and Jane Viola Davis Eastman.

In 1912 she married John D Allison of Chaffee, he died October 10, 1938.  A son, Jack Allison died November 8, 1973.

Mrs. Allison was employed at the Shriners Hospital in St. Louis several years and retired as a sales clerk at Dame's in 1967.

She was a member of the First United Methodist in Chaffee, the American Legion Post #389, VFW Ladies Auxiliary, and Scott County RSVP, all of Chaffee.

She is survived by numerous nephews and nieces.

Services were conducted at Amick-Burnett Funeral Chapel with Rev. Jeffry C Spaulding, pastor of the church, officiating.  Burial was in Friends Cemetery in Oran.

Pallbearers were Charles Goddard, Charles Cunningham, Joe Perry Rice, Forest Finch, Dave Pepple, and Ed Caul.

He worked for Frisco Railway Co. for 43 years, he was a member of the Assembly of God Church in Cape.

He is survived by a son George M. Allwood, daughter; Elizabeth “Betty” Golightly and a brother Ervin Allwood.

He is survived his wife, daughters Carolyn Allwood and Pat Hindman, a sister; Betty Golightly.

Mr. Allwood was born April 27, 1907 in Missouri son of Joseph Francis Allwood. He  died January 3, 1975 in Kennett, Dunklin Co., MO. He married Madge Hattie Stafford of Chaffee on May 16, 1941.

He began working on the Frisco Railway as a Section hand  in 1941 and retired in 1964.

He was a member of First Baptist Church in Chaffee.

He is survived by 2 brothers George Emory Allwood of Chaffee and Ervin Allwood of Maysville, MO. One sister, Mrs. Bessie Fitzgerald preceded him in death on April 13, 1972.

Madge H Allwood, 95, of Chaffee died Sunday January 7, 2001, at the Chaffee Nursing Center.

She was born March 16, 1905 in Bloomfield, MO., daughter of Robert Miller and Elizabeth Stevens Stafford.  She and Joe Allwood were married May 16, 1941.  He died January 3, 1975.

Allwood was a member of the First Baptist Church in New Athens, IL.

Survivors include one half brother; Robert Stafford and one half sister, Ruth Allwood, both of Chaffee and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by four half brothers and one half sister.

Friends may call at Amick-Burnett Funeral Chapel in Chaffee.  Graveside service will be held at Union Park Cemetery in Chaffee.  Watis Harrell will officiate.

Audra Alsobrook, age 85, died May 25, 1989. She was born February 12, 1904 in Buchanan, MO to Levi Roscoe and Francis Josephine Nanney Patterson. She married Edward Franklin Alsobrook on May 22, 1921. He died December 2, 1949.

She was a member of First Christian Church in Chaffee.

Survivors include a son Kenneth Edward Alsobrook, daughters; Mary Verble and Maxine Ancell and a sister Irene Barton.

She resided at 205 N. Third.

Mabel Alston

     Mabel M. Alston, 88, of Chaffee, died March 31, 2003, at the Chaffee Nursing Center.

     She was born September 28, 1914, in Neosho County, KS, daughter of Elzie Sigle and Florence Elizabeth Sours Edwards.  She and Wm. Riley Alston were married July 1, 1932. He died December 17, 1992.

     Alston moved to Chaffee in 1976 from Chalmette, LA. She formerly was a cashier at the Chevrolet dealership in Leavenworth, KS. She was a member of First Assembly of God Church in Chaffee.

     Survivors include two daughters, Billie Minor of Chaffee, Nancy Buyan of Florence, OR; a sister, Cris Finney of Fairfax, VA; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and 10 great-great-grandchildren.

     She was preceded in death by a brother, a great-grandson and a great-great grandson.

     There was no visitation.

     Internment was at a later date in Springfield National Cemetery in Springfield, MO.

Earl A. Alvey, age 79, died March 27, 1989. He was born August 31, 1909 in Harrison, Arkansas to Tom and Minnie Wendlyn Alvey. He married Mary Ann Malone on November 19, 1927.

He is survived by his wife, sons Ronnie and Elton Alvey, daughters; Mrs. Jeanie Stroup and Mrs. Marylyn Sparkman.

He was a retired cross watchman for the Terminal RR Co., in St. Louis.

He was a member of Assembly of God Church in Advance, MO.

Burial was in Union Park Cemetery in Chaffee

 

   

Fred Alvey

Word was received in Chaffee by Virgil Alvey of the death of a brother, Fred Alvey, 61 years old, of Seattle, WA.  Death was attributed to cancer.

Mr. Alvey was born August 19, 1903, in Kennett, MO. He was a former Chaffee resident and had operated the Dinner Bell Cafe in Chaffee.

In addition to his brother, surviving is his wife, Mrs. Marie Alvey of Seattle; two other brothers, Earl Alvey of Glen Allen, MO, and Emmett Alvey of the state of CA; a sister, Mrs. Lillie Newcon, Hang City, FL, and a half sister, Mrs. Juanita Petryszyn of St. Louis.

Kathryn "Kate" Amos, 76, of Jackson died Wednesday, Jan. 29, 2003, at St. Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau.

She was born Sept. 29, 1926, at Chaffee, Mo., daughter of Earl and Anna Mae Redfern Sanders. She and Nelson Amos were married April 4, 1947, at Chaffee.

Kathryn worked at Sports Specialty Shoe Co. in Chaffee several years. She moved to Jackson in 1999 from Delta. She was a member of First Baptist Church in Delta.

Survivors include her husband; a son and daughter-in-law, Steven and Cheryl Amos of Jackson; a daughter-in-law, LaDena Amos Nelson of Cape Girardeau; a sister, Freda McBride of Scott City; a granddaughter and husband, Shannon Amos Barrett and Nick of Cape Girardeau; a granddaughter, Stephanie Amos of Jackson; two grandsons, Billy Jay Amos of Cape Girardeau, Rodney and Kara Amos of Jackson; two great-grandchildren, Jackson Barrett of Cape Girardeau and Bailey Amos of Jackson.

She was preceded in death by her parents, a son, two sisters, and four brothers.

Bernice Ancell, 86, of Chaffee died Feb. 6, 2004, at her home.

She was born March 22,1917, at Crump, Mo., daughter of Ernest Kirby and Ida Mae Williams Crump. She and Lee Ancell were married Sept. 15, 1934. He died on July 28, 1989.

She worked as a clerk for Doris Food Mart in Chaffee before retirement. She was a member of First Baptist Church, Ladies Auxiliary of American Legion Post 389 and the Ladies Auxiliary of the VFW Post 3127, all in Chaffee.

Survivors include two brothers, Harrel and Paul Crump, both of Chaffee; three sisters, Ethel Anderson and Dorothy Nobles, both of Scott City, and Coletta Hahn of Chaffee.

She was preceded in death by two sisters and a brother.

Funeral will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at the Amick-Burnett funeral chapel, with the Rev. Cliff Day officiating.  Burial will be in Forest Hills Memorial Gardens near Morley, Mo.

Lena Lou Ancell, 57, of Chaffee died May 20, 2004, at her home.

She was born Dec. 2, 1946, at Delta, daughter of Elery Lee and Lora Delo Dunn Hodge.

Ancell was a member of Calvary Baptist Church.

Survivors include two sons, Kevin Ancell of Memphis, Tenn., Keith Ancell of Chaffee; a daughter, Christy Lamb of Blytheville, Ark.; three brothers, Thomas Hodge of Jackson, John Hodge of Kennett, Mo., and Richard Hodge of Chaffee; a sister, Nelda Gross of Jackson; and two grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, four brothers and a sister.

W. Maxine Ancell, 77, of Cape Girardeau died Wednesday, July 17, 2002, at the Lutheran Home.

She was born Feb. 18, 1925, in Chaffee, Mo., daughter of Edward Franklin and Audra Leota Patterson Alsobrook.

Ancell retired as an insurance clerk at Cape Girardeau Surgical Clinic. She was a member of First Christian Church at Chaffee, Mo.

Survivors include a son, David Ancell of Section, Ala.; a daughter, Terrie Eldridge of Cape Girardeau; a brother, Kenny Alsobrook of St. Louis; a sister, Mary Verble of Poplar Bluff, Mo.; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.   She was preceded in death by her parents.

Zenno Washington Ancell, 87 years old, of Chaffee died Wednesday night at a hospital in Cape Girardeau.

Mr. Ancell was born February 2, 1878, near Egypt Mills. He was married in March 1903 to Miss Jessie Hobbs of Cape County. She survives.

The Ancell’s were residents of Chaffee the past 44 years after moving here from Dutchtown. Mr. Ancell was a member of the Methodist Church here   He served as Chaffee Chief of Police for nine years before his retirement and was a member of the Southeast Missouri Peace Officers Association.

In addition to his wife, survivors are a son, Leland Ancell of Chaffee, a grandson, Marvin Ancell, Chaffee and two great grandchildren.

The body is at the Bisplinghoff Funeral Home. Services will be conducted there at 2 Saturday afternoon with the Rev. L.E. Butler officiating. Burial will be in Forest Hills Cemetery near Morley.

Hubert J. Andrews, age 59, died August 10, 1979. He was born September 27, 1919 in Morley, MO to Euin Grant and Nettie Riley Andrews. He married Laura Walker on January 14, 1950.

He is survived by his father, his wife, sons; Hubert McDonald, Mark and Jerry Andrews, daughters; Mrs. Sue Sherry and Mrs. Anita Fisher, a brother E. G. Andrews and sisters; Mrs. Herbert Hale and Mrs. Alma McDonald. He was preceded by an infant Charles Andrews.

 

James L. Andrews

Chaffee-1963-Missourian

Funeral services were conducted today for James L. Andrews of Route 1, Chaffee, a retired employee of Southwestern Bell Telephone Company. Mr. Andrews began working for the Telephone Company in 1905 and worked in Cape for the company for 42 years before retiring in 1954.

Mr. Andrews died Saturday at a Cape hospital. He was admitted Friday. He was 73 years old.

He was born I Garland County, Arkansas, June 8, 1889. He married Stella Lapp at Chaffee on December 24, 1936. Mr. Andrews was a member of the First Baptist Church of Cape and a member of the Council of pioneers, and organization of retired Bell Telephone employees.

He is survived by his wife, a daughter, Mrs. Dewayne (Barbara) Welter of Route 1 Chaffee, a brother, Robert A. Andrews of Chaffee and a sister, Mrs. Mollie A. Crouch of Tucson, Arizona.

Services were held at Bisplinghoff funeral Home in Chaffee with the Rev. Bill Ellis of the Chaffee First Baptist Church officiating. Burial was in New Lorimier Cemetery in Cape.
