BADDERS, SAMUEL ELI

Eli Badders, 43, local laborer, instantly killed, while two other escaped uninjured at noon last Saturday when two automobiles collided at the intersection of 4th Street and West Yoakum Avenue.  Badders was killed instantly when he was thrown from the rear seat of a Ford tour car over to the edge of the sidewalk, suffering a fractured skull.

Badders was riding in the rear of the Ford touring car being driven by Alvin Enderle.  They were going north on 4th Street.  Richard Martin, timekeeper for the Callaway Construction Company, was coming east on Yoakum Avenue in his sedan.  One of Martin's front wheels is thought to have struck Enderle's left rear wheel, the impact throwing the car completely around and throwing it up over the curb on the northeast corner of the intersection.  Badders was thrown out, possibly through the top, to the edge of the sidewalk.  The Ford was badly damaged.

Badders is survived by his widow and five children, the oldest of whom is 12 years of age, the youngest just an infant.  They had resided here for the past 12 years and was of moderate circumstances.  He worked at various occupations, but was not regularly employed.

Funeral services were held at the First Baptist Church being conducted by the pastor, Rev. Blount F Davidson.  An escort from the Aubuchon-Alsobrook Post of the American Legion took part in the services, Badders having been a World War veteran.  Interment was made in Union Park Cemetery.

Clarence "Dutch" Barron

Chaffee Signal-Feb. 2, 1944

Funeral services for Clarence "Dutch" Barron, 36 years old, were held at the Methodist Church here last Sunday afternoon at 4:30 o'clock, being conducted by the pastor, Rev. J. B. Jordan, who was assisted by Rev. W. L. Keeney, pastor of the local Baptist Church.

"Dutch" as he was affectionately known, was a telegraph operator for the Cotton Belt Railroad at Rockview. He died suddenly a few minutes after he reported for work there at 4 o'clock Wednesday afternoon, February 16. He had been in ill health for several years, but had been working regularly. He had relieved Mr. Garnet of Chaffee and at 4 o'clock Mr. Garnet had started home. Signal Crew Foreman Baldridge, who happened to be present, took some written orders from the tower to the crew of a train, which had just arrived. When Baldridge returned about three minutes later he found Mr. Barron's body on the floor.

An inquest was held, after a physician had been called, and the verdict was that death was due to a heart attack.

The body was brought to Bisplinghoff Funeral Home. The services at the Methodist Church Sunday afternoon were held at 4:30 in the expectation that the deceased's brother, Sgt. Allen Barron of San Diego, CA would arrive that afternoon, but due to Sgt. Barron's train being six hours late he did not reach Chaffee until Late Sunday night. However, burial was deferred until Monday morning when another service was held at the Bisplinghoff Funeral Home.
