Henry Hahn

Chaffee-Nov. 25, 1953

Henry I. Hahn, 46 years old, a switchman for the Frisco Railroad, was instantly killed around 11:30 a.m. today when he was caught between a moving coal car on a switch track and the brick side of the Missouri Utilities Company power plant.

The switch crew had backed the yard engine onto the siding tracks to pick up an empty coal car. The tracks run along side the utilities company building about four feet distant.  Mr. Hahn had unlocked a de-rail, a device that fits over one of the tracks and blocks its use to other cars. He stepped back against the wall as the engine began to pull the coal car out onto the main line, waiting to lock the de-rail after the car had passed. At the point where he was standing the wall projects outward four inches. This four-inch projection extends about 6 feet, where the wall again drops back.

Conjecture among officers and others at the scene was that Mr. Hahn thought he was outside the four-inch projection when actually he was against it. He was pinned between the moving car and the building and carried most of the six-foot distance of the projection, falling beside the rear door of the plant.

The body was about 10 feet from the point where evidence on the wall showed he was first struck. Signs found on a brace midway the length of the coal car, indicating that is where it first struck him.

Coroner J. F. Sigmund, called to the scene ordered an inquest for 7:30 o’clock tonight at the Haman Funeral Home. A jury viewed the body at Bisplinghoff Funeral Home in Chaffee, this afternoon.

Members of the crew with Mr. Hahn were G. F. Maxwell of Chaffee, the engineer, Leon H. Schoen of Chaffee, the other switchman, and C. E. Campbell of Cape the conductor.

Mr. Hahn had been with the railroad for a number of years. He was married to the former Miss Nora Scheeter.

He is survived by his wife, two sons, Jim and Bob Hahn at home; ad daughter, Marilyn Hahn at home; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Joe Hahn of Oran; three brothers; Paul Hahn of Cape, and Herbert and Frank Hahn of Oran, MO; a sister, Mrs. Louis Pobst of Oran.
