Lester Jackson

Lester Jackson, 88, of Chaffee died Friday, December 19, 1997, at Southeast Missouri Hospital in Cape Girardeau.

He was born January 24, 1909, in Thebes, IL, son of Charlie and Stella Baker Jackson. He and Ada Mae Asher were married August 7, 1926.

Jackson retired as an insole tacker at International Shoe Co. in Cape. He was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church.

Survivors include his wife; two sons, Robert Jackson of Chaffee, William Jackson of Port St. Lucie, Fl: nine grandchildren; and 17 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by three sisters and a brother.

Friends may call at Amick-Burnett Funeral Chapel in Chaffee after 5 p.m. Sunday. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at St. Paul Church, with the Rev. Wayne Schwiesow officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery in Cape.

Paul D. Jaco, 63, of Delta died February 8, 2001.

He was born November 2, 1937, at Delta, son of John Fred Curtis and Suddy Biri Jaco. He and Janet Jaco were married February 14, 1969. She died July 23, 1996.

Jaco retired as a machine operator at Baldor Electric in St. Louis.

He served in the Army.

Suvivors include four sons, James Lankford of CA, Allen Lankford of Bloomfield, MO, Dean Lankford of Pacific, MO and David Lankford of Delta; three sisters, Blanch foster of CA, Stella Brown of Scopus, MO and Hettie McClard of Marble Hill, MO; and six grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers.

Services were conducted at Amick-Burnett Funeral Chapel with Rev. Lee Roy Quinn officiating. Burial was in Union Park Cemetery.

       Paul Jamerson, age 47, died September 4, 1962. He was born October 17, 1914 in Essex, MO to Oscar James and Norma Auchenbold Jamerson. He married Ethel Crump of Chaffee on October 17, 1946. He served in WWII, following his discharge he was employed by Sports Specialty Shoe Company. He also started Jamerson Refrigeration Company in 1958.

       He is survived by his wife, two brothers, Russell G. and James Oscar Jamerson and one sister, Mrs. Herbert Garner.

April 27, 1944 Funeral services were held at First Baptist Church here Friday afternoon for Mrs. Charles Jarrell, 62 years old, wife of Charles Jarrell, who died of asthma at 10 o'clock the night of April 18. She had been in failing health the past 15 years, but her condition became serious only a year ago. The services were conducted by Rev. Ernest Lee and interment was made in Union Park Cemetery with Bisplinghoff service. Besides her husband, Mrs. Jarrell is survived by a nephew, Norman Nelson, who has made his home at the Jarrell residence since 1931. A brother Halley Carbaugh, passed away last August. Mrs. Jarrell was born May 4, 1882 in Posey County, Illinois, and was the former Miss Minnie Carbaugh. She and Mr. Jarrell were married March 9, 1910, at Mount Vernon, Indiana. They moved to Hayti where he was employed by the Frisco Railroad, and in 1917 they moved to Chaffee.

 

Cynthia M. Jeffries

            Cynthia Margaret Jeffries, age 86, died at 2:45 a.m. Monday in Chaffee General Hospital.

            She was born March 25, 1893 in Tuscumbia, AL to Lafayette F. and Octimmie Webb Crittenden.

            On May 25, 1914 she married Willie Jeffries of Poplar Bluff, MO. He preceded her in death on March 13, 1953.

            She was a member of First Baptist Church and the Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen Ladies Auxiliary.

            Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Barney (Opal) Green of Petersburg, VA, and Mrs. Elmer (Ethel) Cannon of Manchester, and six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

            The body was at Amick-Burnett Funeral Chapel where services were held at 10 a.m. Wednesday with ethe Rev. Sid West, pastor of First Baptist Church officiating.

            Burial was in Memorial Park Cemetery in Cape.

Buford James Jenkerson, Jr.

       Buford Jenkerson, age 53, died November 10, 1975 in an automobile accident. He was born August 9, 1922 in Bonne Terre, MO to Buford J. and Lillian Mabel Stegall Jenkerson.  He resided at 327 W. Davidson at the time of his death. He married Lena Viola Smith of Elvins, Mo on June 30, 1942. He owned and operated the Toddle Inn at Chaffee and they also owned a farm near Lake Wappapello and were on their way there when the accident happened.

       He is survived by his wife and a daughter Mrs. Nancy Steele and two grandchildren, Rhonda and Allen Steele.

     Viola Jenkerson, age 69, died February 14, 1990. She was born July 16, 1920 in Bunker, MO to Robert and Bessie Chapman Smith. She married Buford Jenkerson Jr. on June 30, 1942.

       She owned Toddle Inn in Chaffee until 1978. She was a member of First Baptist Church in Chaffee and resided at 327 W. Davidson.

       Surviving her is a daughter, Nancy Rhodes, sister, Victoria Mefford and grandchildren, Rhonda Stewart and Allen Steele and great grandchild, James Allen Steward.

Ruth Marie Jenkins

       Ruth Jenkins, age 89, died April 6, 1993. She was born March 3, 1904 in Greenbrier, MO to Clarence and Mary Jane Shell Hindman. She married Clyde Jenkins on June 16, 1922.

       She was a member of First Baptist Church of Chaffee.

       She is survived by a daughter, maxine Woods, sister, Ruby Cracraft.

 

Simon Joseph Jirik

Aug. 29, 1982 Funeral services for Simon J. Jirik of Chaffee were held Monday at St. Ambrose Catholic Church with Rev. Raymond Kunkel officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery, with Amick-Burnett Funeral Home of Chaffee in charge of the arrangements. Jirik, 78 years old, died Friday at Baptist Memorial Hospital in Memphis, TN, following open heart surgery last week. He was born March 6, 1904 at Verona, son of Frank and Rose Riedle Jirik. He and the former Philomena Mary Schramm of Fenton, MO were married February 5, 1925. Jirik was dairy farmer 20 years, retiring in 1964 and moving to Chaffee. He was a member of St. Ambrose Church and its Men's Club, Golden Agers Club and Knights of Columbus Oran Council 4311. Survivors include his wife, four sons, David C. of Bloomsdale, Frank of Aurora, Leroy of Monet, Norman of Germantown, TN, two sisters, Mrs. Katie Pruenty of Kansas City, MO, Mrs. Margaret Schatz of Billings, and 10 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two sisters.

Fred Jobe, 73, of Chaffee died February 15, 1999, at St. Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau. He was born February 19, 1925, in Catron, MO, son of Fred and Nettie Leona Byers Jobe. He and Margery White were married June 7, 1943. Jobe retired as a machine operator with Missouri Petroleum Company in St. Louis, He was a member of General Baptist Church in Chaffee. Survivors include his wife; three sons James, Mike and Bill Jobe, all of Chaffee; two daughters, Sue Rinehart and Gail Ing, both of Chaffee; a brother, Harold Jobe of Dover, Del; a sister, Della Heath of Oil City, PA, nine grandchildren; and six great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by six brothers. Friends may call at Amick-Burnett Funeral Chapel in Chaffee after 4 p.m. today. Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the chapel, with the Rev. Joe Payne officiating. Burial will be in Union Park Cemetery.

   

Gregg Jobe

Gregg Jobe, 39, of Chaffee died Aug. 9, 2008, in the Mississippi River near Cape Girardeau.

He was born July 14, 1969, to James and Willa Luna Jobe. He and Kathy Ann Riley were married Aug. 22, 1992.

He worked as a certified medical technician at the Missouri Veterans Home for seven years. He then worked as a shop foreman at Plaza Tire in Cape Girardeau.

He loved to fish on the Mississippi River and liked NASCAR racing.

He was a member of the Church of God in Cape Girardeau.

Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Casey Sue Jobe; his father; a brother, Shawn Jobe; and his stepmother, Cindy Jobe, all of Chaffee.

He was preceded in death by his mother.

A memorial service date has not been set. The service will be held at the river.

Amick-Burnett Funeral Chapel in Chaffee is in charge of arrangements.

 

 

JOBE, MARJORIE ANN

Marjorie Ann Jobe, 75, of Chaffee died March 17, 2003, at her home.

She was born May 13, 1927, in Sikeston, Mo., daughter of William Henry and Virgin Minnie Slinkard White.  She and Fred Jobe were married June 7, 1943.  He died Feb. 15, 1999.

Jobe was a retired nurse aide, having worked at Chaffee General Hospital. She was a member of General Baptist Church in Chaffee.

Survivors include three sons, James, Mike and Bill Jobe, all of Chaffee; three daughters, Sue Rinehart, Gail Ing and Becky Ivester, all of Chaffee; a brother, Edward White of Chaffee; four sisters, Mary Dennis of Chaffee, Carol Morris and Martha Standridge, both of Sikeston, and Camille Crumbaugh of Springfield, Ill.; 10 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by four brothers, two sisters and a granddaughter.

Friends may call after 4 p.m. today at Amick-Burnett Funeral Chapel in Chaffee.

Funeral will be at Amick-Burnett Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Cliff Day officiating.  Burial will be in Union Park Cemetery.

 

Lillie May Johnson

Mrs. Lillie May Johnson, 89 years old, wife of the late Joseph Johnson, died Thursday morning at the home of a daughter, Mrs. Bertha Fuzzell of near Malden. She had been in failing health the last few years. The body was taken to the Fuzzell Funeral Home Thursday from the Bisplinghoff Funeral Home in Chaffee. It remained there until time for services at 1:30 Friday afternoon at the Assembly of God Church in Malden, MO. Interment was in the Senath Cemetery with Bisplinghoff in charge. Mrs. Johnson was born January 19, 1869, at Indianapolis, Indiana the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Tackeberry. She and Mr. Johnson were married in 1890 at Senath and since his death in 1939, she had resided with the daughter. Other survivors include two additional daughters, Mrs. Wallace Sloan of Kenneth, MO and Mrs. Tommy Owens of Senath, MO; three sons; Fonzie and Herman Johnson of Bragg City, MO, and Ted Johnson of Kennett, MO; 12 grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.

Johnston, Roy Woodrow, 85, of Chaffee died April 8, 2003, at Chaffee Nursing Center.

He was born Jan. 31, 1918, at Bell City, Mo., son of Lurena Johnston. He married the former Jessie Kurd.

Johnston worked in construction in the area, including several years for Potashnick. He had also worked in Oklahoma, Arkansas and Kansas.

He was a member of Grace United Methodist Church at Rockview, Mo., Operating Engineers Local 513 in St. Louis, a 32nd Degree Mason at Chaffee Masonic Lodge, and member of Grand Order of Sword of Bunker Hill 2193.

There are no survivors.

Friends may call at Ford and Sons Funeral Home in Benton, Mo. The funeral will be at the funeral home.  The Rev. Marty Blakey will officiate. Burial will be in Friend Cemetery at Oran, Mo

T.P. Johnson

Chaffee-1963-Missourian

     Thomas Pled Johnson, 63, a retired Frisco Railway locomotive engineer for the past 44 years on the River Division, died suddenly Tuesday morning in the office of a local physician. Death was caused by a heart attack. Mr. Johnson had visited the doctor for treatment of a foot injury and suffered the attack as he was leaving the physician’s office.

    “Pee-Dad,” as he was known to his friends, was the senior engineer in service on the Frisco River Division. He was promoted to engineer on June 12, 1945 and was holding the Chaffee to Memphis passenger job. He began work for the Frisco as a fireman in December 14, 1920.

     Mr. Johnson was born in Ridgely, TN on October 14, 1900, a son of W.O. and Leona Johnson. He graduated from high school at Burdett, Ar. He married Miss Lucy L. Burks of Blytheville, on September 8, 1922 and the couple moved to Chaffee in 1923.

   He is survived by his wife, one daughter Mrs. Ann Boussom of San Diego, Ca, and one sister, Mrs. Leroy Dougans of Washington, D.C. An infant son preceded him in death.

    He was a member of the First Methodist Church, the Brotherhood of Locomotive Firemen and Engineers, the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers, the Order of Eastern Star, the A.F. and A.M. and the Chaffee Lodge of Elks.

     An Elks Memorial service will be conducted Thursday evening at 7:30 in the Bisplinghoff Funeral Home, where the funeral will be Friday morning at 10:00 with the Rev. L.E. Butler officiating. Masonic rites will follow.

   The body will be taken to the Maple Grove Cemetery in Blytheville, Ar for graveside rites at 3:30.

       Ansel Jones, age 75, died February 19, 1990. He was born January 4, 1915 in St. Louis to Ansel Post and Olivia Anderson Jones. He married Marguerite Dunn on April 25, 1959.

       He was a member of First Baptist Church in Chaffee and resided at 511 W. Yoakum.

       He is survived by his wife, a daughter, Delores Ponder and two sisters; Audrey O’Hara and Louise Dark. One son Donald Jones preceded him in death.

       Dorinda Jones, age 48, died March 23, 1984. She was born May 21, 1935 in Zalma, MO to Claude Raymond and Emma Ella Gobble Dees. She married Delbert M. Jones on June 12, 1954.

       She is survived by her husband, parents, three sons; David, Ricky and Scott Jones, daughter, Kathy Jones, a brother, Avery Dees and one sister, Terri Mabrey.

       Herbert Jones, age 56, died August 17, 1980. He was born March 4, 1924 in London, AR to Joe Hoyt and Selma Marie Hickey Jones.

       He was a member of Free Trinity Pentecostal Church in Randles, MO.

       He is survived by his mother, and two sisters, Mrs. Ervin Blackard and Mrs. Ray Gene Simpson. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Kathy and a brother, Kenneth Jones.

     Mrs. Margaret M. Jones, one of the oldest resident in the district, died Tuesday morning at the home of her daughter, Mrs. R.K. Ware of Morrilton, Ar, at the age of 93. She had been in failing health the past two years. Mrs. Jones leaves 145 direct descendants.

   Mrs. Jones, who was Margaret McFerron, was born November 9, 1856, at Kelso and had spent her entire life in this district.

   In 1874 she married W.D. Jones, who is now dead, and of the 12 children born to them, seven are surviving. They are C. H. Jones of Seventy-Six, S.J. Jones of Ziegler, Il, W. R. Jones of Chaffee, Mrs. Otto Hauss of St. Louis, Mrs. L.L. Whittaker of Little Rock, Mrs. Ware and Mrs. Jack Jackson of Chaffee. Also surviving are 52 grandchildren and 76 great grandchildren.

    The body is at the Bisplinghoff Funeral Home in here where it will remain until time for services to be held at 2 o’clock Thursday afternoon at the First Baptist Church, Rev. J.C. Stephens will conduct the rites and burial will be in the Rockview Cemetery.

 

 

 

JONES, MARGUERITE BERNICE

Marguerite Bernice Jones, 87, of Chaffee died April 22, 2005, at the Monticello House in Jackson.

She was born May 23, 1917, in Oran, Mo., daughter of Mark Cecil and Dora Ellen Thornton Dunn. She and Ansel "Bud" Jones were married April 25, 1959. He died Feb. 19, 1990.

Jones was a retired self-employed artist and beautician. She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Chaffee.

Survivors include a daughter, Delores Ponder of Chaffee; five grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and three great-great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a son, two brothers and a sister.

Funeral will be at 1 p.m. Monday at the Amick-Burnett Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. Jack Bishop officiating. Burial will be in Union Park Cemetery at Chaffee.

Memorial services for Ruby M. Jones, daughter of Chaffee Signal founder Charles E. Mattocks, were held at Klinger Funeral Home in Springfield, MO, with burial in Hazelwood Cemetery in Springfield.

Jones, 83 years old, died in Little Rock, AR (1988).

She was born August 9, 1905 in Cedar City, MO. She graduated from Chaffee High School and Cape Business College. After college she returned to Chaffee to work with her father at the Signal.

She married Harry E. Jones, her husband of 62 years, who survives of Little Rock.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Charles E. and Mary McDaniel Mattocks of Chaffee.

Other survivors include, two sons, Jerry M. Jones of Little Rock, who is editor of the Arkansas Gazette, and Ralph K. Jones.

Survivors include David Jones of Sikeston, Mo., Keith Chapman of Oran, Mo.; two sisters, Connie Archuletta of Vallejo, Calif., and Tracy Whitaker of Chaffee.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother.

Graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Union Park Cemetery in Chaffee.

Wesley Leon Jones, 51, of Jackson died Aug. 20, 2007, at his home.

He was born March 26, 1956, in Fulton, Mich., son of Lester Monroe and Dollie Clark Jones. He and Melinda Bostic were married Feb. 14, 2003, in Effingham, Ill.

Jones was general manager of Cracker Barrel Old Country Store in Cape Girardeau.

Survivors include his wife; three sons, Chris Jones of Cape Girardeau, Richard Jones of Bloomfield, Mo., Steven Jones of St. Louis; a daughter, Jessica Hutchison of St. Louis; a brother, Hilbert Jones of Sulphur, La.; two sisters, Doris Elder of Dexter, Mo., Margaret Pauling of Freemont, Ohio; and four grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Visitation and funeral will be at Rainey-Mathis Funeral Home in Dexter with the Rev. Winferd Wren officiating. Burial will be in Union Park Cemetery at Chaffee, Mo.
