Aug. 5, 1962

A car stalled in a rainstorm in heavy Sunday night traffic, setting off a three-vehicle crash which took two lives and injured four people.

The deaths in the accident on Hwy 61 near Uniontown, MO were the second and third on Cape area roads Sunday.

Fatally injured in the Uniontown crash was Mrs. Ethel Helen Kielhofner, 56 years old of Chaffee, MO, and Robert Lee Hodges, 63 years old of Kirkwood, MO. They were passengers in different cars, each of which came into contact with a tractor-trailer truck driven by Kenneth Dickson, 32, of Sikeston.

The Highway Patrol gave this account of the accident: a car driven by John Whitley, 56, of Kirkwood, stalled while traveling north up a hill. Mr. Whitley got out and went to the rear of the car to flag other northbound traffic. Before he could do so and push his car off the road, the large truck slammed into the rear of the car, jackknifed and then collided with the southbound car driven by Charles Kielhofner, 59, husband of the dead woman. The patrol quoted the truck driver as saying he did not see the stalled car and that he swerved to the left. The accident occurred at 10 o’clock in a heavy rain, the patrol said.

The injured were taken to Perry County Memorial Hospital. Mr. Kielhofner was reported this morning in critical condition with a broken leg and internal injuries.
