LAGRANGE, A. FRANK

Jumped from box car into speeding passenger train.

Frank LaGrange

Signal-Fri. May 5, 1922

Hurled to death by a speeding passenger train while leaving the train in which he had been riding, was the fate of Frank LaGrange 15, and a native of city, the accident occurring in Poplar Bluff, MO late Tuesday evening.

Tuesday evening about 8 o’clock a message was received here by H. L. LaGrange, that his oldest son, Frank had been accidentally killed by a Missouri Pacific train at Poplar Bluff.

From the first best accounts obtainable it seems the lad, who was in the company with Harvey Bess and Ralph Cohoon, also of this city, had been riding in a box car of another train, and that Frank jumped from the box car out between the track and a passing track and was struck by a passenger train coming in an opposite direction. The report is that he was thrown clear of the track and instantly killed.

The body was picked up by police and carried to an undertaker’s, when a message was sent first to C. J. Golden of St. Louis, MO. This was done because in the dead lad’s pocket was found a card bearing the name of James Golden, a boy friend of Frank’s and whose home is in St. Louis. Mr. Golden immediately wired back that the dead body was not that of his son, as James was then at home.

About that time someone identified the body, and a message was sent here (Chaffee) to the boy’s father.

Messrs. Joe Sheppard and H. V. Cheatham went over to Poplar Bluff Tuesday night to further identify the body and to bring it here for burial. They arrived over the Hoxie Line via Blomeyer Wednesday night and were met by a local undertaker, who brought the body to the home of the sorrowing parents.

Funeral services were held yesterday afternoon from the Baptist Church in the presence of a large audience of sympathizing friends and sorrowing relatives.

Interment was made in Union Park Cemetery.

Tribute to Landeros

Chaffee Signal

Chaffee lost a truly fine citizen in a tragic accident this past week-end, Manuel Landeros. His enthusiasm and zest for life touched everyone who knew him. Manuel was a devoted family man, an extremely talented artist, was active in the affairs of his church and this community, particularly the youth. He had a special place in his heart for the youth of Chaffee and gave generously of his time and talent in their behalf. It was his firm belief that the future of Chaffee lies in the hands of its youth. The scouts, the members of the baseball teams he worked with are a living legacy of Manuel’s talents.

There is a totem pole on the Chaffee Elementary School grounds that was carved by Manuel for a special scouting event during Chaffee’s 75th anniversary. This will now serve as a monument to Manuel and his love for scouting and all the youth of Chaffee. No scout will ever forget the adventure of a campout with Manuel and his stories of “Amanda”, the pack meetings he conducted and all the fun they had. Manuel’s spirit will live forever in the hearts of the people of Chaffee.

With respect to his memory-one who knew him.

“Last Thursday Chaffee suffered a huge loss—Lela Lankford died.

To the hundreds of people who were fortunate in knowing her, she personified all the qualities that most of us strive for and never attain.

Lela gave totally of herself in everything she did-wife, mother, teacher, pharmacist, librarian, friend and counselor-at-large.

Over the years many of us were privileged to spend thousands of hours listening to her words of wisdom. Throughout these years she was always there when we had a problem. Hundreds of Chaffee people shared this privilege.

Lela is dead, however, she will live on in all of us who knew her. She lived for fifty years in her upstairs apartment. She will now live upstairs eternally.”
