  MABREY, RUBY

Ruby A. Mabrey, 80, of Chaffee died March 20, 2006, at Southeast Missouri Hospital in Cape Girardeau.

She was born March 30, 1925, at Allenville, daughter of Robert and Louise Diamond Eakins. She and Gilbert W. Mabrey were married Jan. 8, 1940.

Mabrey retired as a presser at Thorngate Ltd. in Chaffee.

Survivors include her husband; a son, William Mabrey of Scott City; a daughter, Donna Fisher of Chaffee; four grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a granddaughter, three brothers and four sisters.

Friends may call at Amick-Burnett Funeral Chapel in Chaffee after 5 p.m. today.

The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at the chapel, with the Rev. Watis Harrell officiating. Burial will be in Union Park Cemetery.

       Sherry L. Mackie, age 27, died April 27, 1974. She was born December 5, 1946 in Cape Girardeau, MO the daughter of Richard and Virginia Audrey Matthews Evans.

       She is survived by a daughter, Michele Lynn age 9 of the home, her mother, Mrs. Virginia Phillips, brother, Richard Evans, sister, Mrs. Gary (Elizabeth Ann) Pobst and her father Richard Evans.

       She was a member of First Christian Church in Chaffee.

       Bertha Maddox, age 84, died July 1, 1993. She was born January 27, 1909 in Puxico, MO to Henry and Lena Mae Barnes Hibner. She married James Franklin Maddox on September 18, 1927.

       Iris Maddox, age 61, died June 27, 1997. She was born April 20, 1936 in Wardell, MO to Walter Newman and Mary Elizabeth Edney Clark. She married James Paul Maddox on June 4, 1954.

       James F. Maddox, age 79, died February 26, 1975. He was born in Oran, MO on October 23, 1895 to Noah Demont and Martha Jane Jolly Maddox. He married Bertha Marie Hibner of E. Alton, IL on September 18, 1927.

       He served in U.S. Army during WWI in Europe.

Audrey Mansell

Audrey I. Mansell, 70 years old, of Peoria, IL, and formerly of Chaffee died May 23, 1990 at Beechwood Health Care Center in Pekin, IL.

She was born May 27, 1919, at Hickman, KY, daughter of Curtis B. and Mary O. McKenzie Young.

She married Millard Mansell April 27, 1961, at Chaffee. He survives.

She was a member of the Church of God of Prophecy in E. Peoria, IL. She moved to Il from Chaffee about three years ago.

Other survivors are, two sons, Roy L. Baker, E. Peoria, Melvin E. Baker, Manito, IL; a sister, Mildred Roberts, and six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Services were held in E. Peoria and burial was in Lakeside Cemetery in Pekin.

Laura E. Mansker, 84, of Chaffee, Mo., died May 25, 2003, at Fountainbleau Lodge.

She was born Oct. 6, 1918, in Cape Girardeau, daughter of Emmett Leroy and Bertha Elizabeth Cato McBride.

She was a member of General Baptist Church in Chaffee and the Chaffee Ladies Auxiliary VFW 3127.

Survivors include a son, Bert Wilson of Barnhart, Mo.; a daughter, Sherry Lange of Scott City; a brother, Don McBride of Marmaduke, Ark.; a sister, Betty Grojean of Whitewater, Mo.; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by five brothers.

Visitation will be at 4 p.m. today at Amick-Burnett Funeral Chapel in Chaffee. Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Amick-Burnett Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Larry Rouse officiating. Burial will be in Union Park Cemetery

       Nettie Mansker, age 92, died May 30, 1984. She was born November 5, 1891 in St. Genevieve, County, MO to Vincent Frank and Augusta Nanna Montgomery. She married Wallace Mansker on August 3, 1907.

       She is survived by two sons, Wallace Clay and Lindell Mansker; two daughters, Violet Waddle and Dorothy Wolfe and a sister Nell Taylor.

       She was a member of First Baptist Church in Chaffee and resided at 332 E. Parker.

            Mrs. George Manus died suddenly at Nash, Thursday, and was buried at Chaffee on Friday. Deceased was in Chaffee the afternoon before she died. She was 39 years old and leaves two married daughters and a husband.

     Anna Frances Maples, 94, of Chaffee died March 4, 2003, at Chaffee Nursing Center.

     She was born March 17, 1908, in Wayne County. She and James E. Maples were married December 12, 1928. He died October 23, 1983.

     Maples was a member of the Assembly of God Church and was formerly of Puxico, MO.

     Survivors include a son Herman Maples of Kansas City, MO; three daughters, Hazel Short of Jackson, Helen Wilson of Whitewater, and Connie Spane of Chaffee; a brother, Ervin Westbrook of St. Louis; two sisters, Sylvia Stapp of Chaffee, Lora Maguffle of Flint, MI; nine grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren 1 great-great-grandchild and 1 great-great stepgrandchild.

     Morgan Sifford Funeral Home in Puxico was in charge with burial in Puxico City Cemetery.

Henry Lewis Margrabe

       Henry L. Margrabe died February 2, 1952. He was born February 26, 1890 in Kelso, MO to Henry and Mary Dytis Margrabe. He married Mrs. Jettie Gibbs of Benton, MO on February 9, 1946.

       He is survived by a stepdaughter, Mrs. Rosetta Proffer and Mrs. B. C. Brown, brothers, Will and Robert.

 

   

Herman Margrabe

Herman John Margrabe, 71, of Cape passed away Tuesday September 19, 2000, at St. Francis Medical Center.

He was born October 17, 1928, in Chicago, son of Robert and Mary Magdalene Griffin Margrabe. He and Beatrice P. Houseman were married May 7, 1948.

Mr. Margrabe worked at Lone Star Industries many years, and for the past 30 years was a self-employed sales representative. He was a member of St. Vincent Church and served as usher many years, member of VFW Post 3127 of Chaffee, and Knights of Columbus Council 1111.

He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, stationed in Japan in 1946-47. He was a Seaman 2nd Class and received his aviator license while in the military.

He not only enjoyed his work, but was an avid tennis player.

Survivors include his wife; a son, Larry Margrabe of Dallas, Texas; a daughter and son-in-law, Pat and Danny Burger of New Hamburg, MO; two brothers, Marvin Margrabe of Benton, Lawrence Margrabe of St. Louis; three sisters, Tita Todt and Mary Ann Curtis of Oran, and Doris Margrabe of St. Louis; five grandchildren, Jodi and Eric Margrabe, Matthew, Blake and Lyndsey Burger; two great-grandchildren, Justin and Dustin Deen.

He was preceded in death by his parents, an infant daughter, a brother, and sister.

Funeral services were held at St. Vincent Church with burial in Cape County Memorial Park in Cape.

       Leona Margrabe, age 70, died October 2, 1978. She was born March 7, 1908 in Benton, MO to Jacob Wm. and Josephine Blattel Ourth. She married Everett A. Margrabe on November 6, 1925.

       She is survived by a son, Wm. Margrabe; two daughters, Dorothy June Kuntze and Betty Jo Schuette, four brothers, Henry, Gregory, Eugene and Raymond Ourth and a sister Regina Kinder. One daughter Alena Wright preceded her in death in 1954.

                She was a member of St. Ambrose Catholic Church in Chaffee and resided at 118 Marlene.

Dulcie A. Marshall, 76 years old of Chaffee died March 26, 1986.

She was born April 22, 1909, near Chaffee, the daughter of Walter and Maude Josephine Hunt Jupp.

On August 17, 1935, she married Nelson Marshall. He died March of 1965.

She was a member of First Baptist Church in Chaffee.

Survivors are two sons, Henry Marshall, West Palm Beach, FL, and Walter Marshall of Cape; a daughter, Jo Ann Noble of Chaffee, and one sister, Priscilla and four grandchildren.

Services were held at the church with the Rev. Gerald Collier officiating with burial in Carpenter Cemetery near McMullin, MO.

Millard Martensen, 77 years old, died July 21, 1990, at John J. Pershing Veterans Administration Medical Center at Poplar Bluff.

Born February 11, 1913, at Chaffee, son of Claus and Laura Nunn Martensen. He was an AirForce veteran.

Surviving is a cousin, Gilbert Autry of Mercer Island, WA.

Services were conducted at Amick-Burnett Funeral Chapel with Rev. Charlie Shrum officiating with burial in Memorial Park Cemetery in Cape.

Evelyn Martin, 59, died November 19, 1986, at her home on Hubbard in Chaffee.

She was born May 24, 1927, at Bell City, MO, daughter of Edward and Onnie May Richmond McCulley. She married Edward K. Martin on October 15, 1951. Mrs. Martin was a nurses aide for 15 years at Chaffee General Hospital.

Survivors include a son, Eddie Martin of Scott City; a daughter, Mrs. Deborah Graviett of Chaffee; two brothers, Lloyd O. McCulley of Hope, KS and two grandchildren.

Funeral services were held at Amick-Burnett Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Gerald Collier officiating with burial in Friends Cemetery in Oran.

Walter Masters Dies at Home Here

Walter Phillip Masters, 67, 712 E. McCarty St., Jefferson City, died suddenly of a heart attack yesterday afternoon (Dec 17, 1952) at his home. He was preparing to leave for work at the State Penitentiary where he was a guard when he was stricken.

He was born Aug. 23, 1885 at Sedgewickville, Mo., the son of J. C. and Mahalay Masters. On Dec. 11, 1907 he married Miss Elizabeth Stausing at Cape Girardeau.

Mr. Masters served as chief of police at Chaffee and deputy sheriff of Cape Girardeau County.    

Besides his wife he is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Ruth Buckhannon and Mrs. Mardell Finney, both of Chaffee, Mo.; two sisters, Mrs. Anna Frieze and Mrs. Myrtle Hiefer, both of St. Louis; nine grandchildren, two great-grandchildren.

Burial was in the Memorial Park Cemetery in Cape Girardeau.

 

W. P. “Big Boy” Masters

Chaffee lost another of its earlier citizens, W. P. Masters. Mr. and Mrs. Masters had moved from St. Louis to Chaffee in 1912. He had formerly been employed as a street car motorman.

In Chaffee, he was employed for years in the Frisco Shop Department. When the railroad business was slack, he was on Chaffee’s Police Force. He served a Police Chief for many years.

He is survived by his wife, the former, Elizabeth Kurre, two daughters Mrs. W. J. (Ruth) Buckhanon and Mrs. W. O. (Mardell) Finney of Chaffee.

       Edith Masterson, age 73, died January 1, 1970. She was born December 27, 1896 in Bertrand, MO to Will and Annie Bryant Canoy. She married Wm. H. Masterson of Sikeston, MO on December 29, 1912. They moved to Chaffee in 1945. He died February 26, 1964.

       She is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Jack Strickland, son, Wm. F. Masterson, brother, Culin A. Canoy, sisters, Mrs. Stella Miller and Mrs. Daisy Latham.

       She was a member of First Baptist Church in Chaffee.

    Services will be conducted Friday for Chaffee Police Chief Wm. H. Masterson. Chief Masterson died suddenly Wednesday morning in the office of a physician here. He was 69 years old.

    Death was attributed to a coronary thrombosis, a blood clot near the heart. He had left his duties shortly before his death, telling other city officials he had a pain in his chest and shoulder.

    Chief Masterson had been Chief since 1951, when he was elected to replace Zeno Ancell, who retired. He was re-elected twice to two-year terms and continued in the work after the city adopted the merit system for police officers in 1955.

   He was born August 23, 1894, in Sikeston, a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Will M. Masterson. On December 29, 1912, he married Miss Edith Marie Canoy of Sikeston. She survives. Most of the couple’s married life was spent in Sikeston. Prior to coming to Chaffee in 1945, they had lived in DeSoto for four years.

    Surviving in addition to Mrs. Masterson, is a son, Wm. F. Masterson  of Chaffee, a daughter, Mrs. Jack Strickland of Oak Ridge, two brothers, Roy A. Masterson of Sikeston Route 2, and Harry K. Masterson of Los Angeles Ca, three sisters, Mrs. Nellie McIntosh of Chaffee, Mrs. Archie Laster and Mrs. John Martin of Los Angelos, eight grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

    Chief Masterson was a member of the First Baptist Church in Chaffee, Chaffee Lodge No. 1810 B.P.O.E., the Chamber of Commerce and the Southeast Missouri Law Enforcement Officers Association.

    The body is at the Bisplinghoff Funeral Home in Chaffee, where the Elks Lodge will conduct services at 7:30. Services will be conducted Friday afternoon at 2 at the First Baptist Church by the Rev. Bill Ellis. Burial will be in Union Park Cemetery in Chaffee.

Mary Mattocks

     Mrs. Mary E. Mattocks, 81 years old, died at the Jackson Nursing home, where she had been a patient for several years.

     She was born July 11, 1874, at New Florence, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. B. McDaniel. She was married August 3, 1893 at New Florence to C. E. Mattocks who preceded her in death in 1924.

     She and her husband moved to Oran in February 1910, from Cedar City, MO, and in August of that year moved to Chaffee, where he was editor of the Chaffee Signal. The paper is now owned and operated by their son, Ralph E. Mattocks.

     She was a member of the Eastern Star and the Chaffee Methodist Church.

     Survivors are three daughters, Mrs. W. C. Pahlmann and Mrs. H. E. Jones of Little Rock and Miss Fan Mattocks of St. Louis: the son and two grandsons, Jerry Jones of Springfield and Ralph Kent Jones of Fort Eustic, VA.

     The body was at Bisplinghoff Funeral Home. Services were conducted from the Methodist Church. Burial was in Union Park Cemetery.

       He was editor and owner of Chaffee weekly newspaper for years.

MAXWELL, SARAH ALENE

Sarah Alene Maxwell, 94, of Chaffee died May 15, 2007, at The Lutheran Home in Cape Girardeau.

She was born April 22, 1913, at Puxico, Mo., daughter of Henry Warren and Cora Lee Hodge Shrum. She and Guy Maxwell were married March 23, 1935. He died April 5, 1967.

Maxwell was a retired bookkeeper who had worked at Sports Specialty Shoe Co. and Florsheim Shoe Factory in Chaffee. She was a member of the Chaffee Order of the Eastern Star Chapter 48 and the First Christian Church in Chaffee.

Survivors include a son, Jack Maxwell of Jefferson City, Mo.; a daughter, Janis Martin of Opelika, Ala.; four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and four great-stepgrandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, a daughter and six sisters.

Friends may call starting at Amick-Burnett Funeral Chapel in Chaffee. Funeral will be at the funeral home. The Rev. Vyron Yount will officiate, with burial in Fairmount Cemetery in Cape Girardeau.

 

   

 

MAXWELL, SIDNEY

Sidney F. Maxwell, 82, retired Frisco locomotive engineer, died June 26, 1960, at the home of his son, Clyde Maxwell, in Arizona, following a 10-day illness with a heart ailment.

Mr. Maxwell, who had been visiting his son there since the 1st of April, had prepared to return to his home here when he was stricken.

He had retired nine months ago, on September 22, 1959, after more than 58 years service with the railroad.

He began his railroad career with the St. Louis, Kennett & Southern as a locomotive fireman, at Kennett, on June 30, 1901. This road was later acquired by the Frisco, and he worked on a local out of Kennett until 1904, when he moved to Cape. In 1907 he transferred to yard service in Cape and was promoted to yard engineer in 1914. He worked in the yards at Sapulpa, OK, and Chaffee, and was working at Cape when he retired.

Mr. Maxwell was born December 29, 1877, at Darden, TN, and was married to the former Miss Effie George at Kennett in 1908. She preceded him in death, at their home here on August 5, 1939.

Mr. Maxwell is survived by two sons, H. G. Maxwell of Chaffee and Clyde Maxwell of Tucson, AZ, a daughter, Mrs. Helen Lott, also of Tucson, three brothers, James, Jesse and Phillip Maxwell, a sister, Mrs. Winnie Evans, all of Parsons, TN, three grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

Mr. Maxwell was a member of the Chaffee Methodist Church, the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and the Chaffee Lodge of Elks. Funeral services were held at the Bisplinghoff Funeral Home. Rev. L. E. Butler conducted the services with burial in Farimount Cemetery in Cape.

       Stack McAlister, age 79, died May 11, 1993. He was born July 17, 1913 in Portageville, MO to James Wm. and Pearl Newhouse McAlister. He married first Eva Rose on December 28, 1934, she preceded him in death on June 9, 1972. He married Nora Ellen Dalton on March 25, 1976.

       He is survived by six sone, Eugene, Von, Casey, Fines, Wayne and Talmas McAlister; three daughters, Virginia Elfrank, Faye Thompson and Wanda Vogel and a brother, Felix McAlister. He resided at 103 Ann Court.

MCBRIDE, WILLIAM A.

William A McBride (age 53) of Chaffee died 11-21-1984 in Southeast Missouri Hospital in Cape Girardeau.  He was born 5-23-1931, at Blomeyer, MO. son of the late Emmett and Bertha Cato McBride.

The McBrides moved to Chaffee from Wellington, Ohio in July, 1984.  He worked 26 years for Borg-Warner at Elyria, Ohio before retiring in 1983.

He was an Army veteran, having served during the Korean Conflict.  He was a life member and past commander of the VFW Post 6941 in Wellington.

Surviving, in addition to his wife, a son James Lee McBride of Elyria; 3 daughters, Elizabeth Kay Keen, Chaffee, Kelley Rae Vails, Dexter, and Tina Gaye McBride, of the family home; 4 brothers, Emmett McBride, Scott City, Harry McBride and George Herman McBride, both of Chaffee, and Charles McBride, Marmaduke, Arkansas; 2 sisters, Mrs. Laura Mansker, Chaffee, and Mrs. Betty Grojean, Gordonville; and 3 grandchildren.

Services at Amick-Burnett Funeral Home and Burial in Union Park Cemetery.

 

 
   

Julia May McCammon

Julie M. McCammon, 90 years old, of Chaffee, died January 20, 1988 at the Cape Care Center.

She was born at Clinton, October 3, 1897, daughter of Benjamin and Mollie Stauch Fee.

She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Chaffee, and life member of WSCS of the church. She was also a member of the Chaffee Order of Eastern Star.

Her husband, Bert McCammon preceded her in death.

She is survived by a niece, Virginia Frazier of CA.

Charles Boyd McClard

Charles Boyd McClard, 49, of Chaffee died May 24, 2001, at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Marion, IL.

He was born June 30, 1951, in Cape Girardeau, MO, the son of Arnold and Julia Richardson McClard. He married Marilyn Hahn on March 8, 1976. She survives.

He was a mechanic. He served in the U. S. Army.

He is survived by his mother, Julia Winder of Cape; a son, Clinton McClard of Chaffee; a brother, Dick McClard of Cape; and a half-sister, Mary Strong of Kellyville, OK.

He was preceded in death by his father.

Graveside rites were conducted at Union Park Cemetery in Chaffee with Rev. Watis Harrell officiating. Amick-Burnett Funeral Chapel were in charge of arrangements.

       Michael MeClard, age 30, died August 22, 1985. He was born February 17, 1955 in Galveston, TX to Maple Frank and Betty Jean Wright McClard. He married Brenda Sue Keller on November 6, 1980.
