Dr. Robert E. Tribble, M.D.

Chaffee-1964-Missourian

Dr. Robert E. Tribble, 35 years old Chaffee medical doctor, was killed a 8 a.m. last Thursday (Feb 6, 1964) four miles north of Chaffee in a three car accident on the north end of the Diversion Channel bridge on state highway 25. The doctor was on his way to treat patients at a Cape hospital.

The accident occurred about midway in the span. The bridge is 22 feet wide at that point with a concrete retaining wall along the sides.

The Highway Patrol said the accident occurred when a car traveling north in front of Dr. Tribble’s vehicle began stopping as a result of a tire blowout. Dr. Tribble began slowing his auto rapidly and apparently skidded on the wet bridge floor into the oncoming lane of traffic. His car was struck broadside by a car  traveling south driven by James Cable, 45, of St. Louis, the patrol stated.

The car sustaining the blowout in front of Dr. Tribble was driven by Hubert Woods, 29, of Bell City. Dr. Tribble’s car was  struck on the right side, the force of the blow carrying Cable’s car four feet into the doctor’s vehicle. There were no passengers in any of the three cars. The Woods car was not damaged. Mr. Cable was taken to St. Francis Hospital in Cape with nose injuries and contusions and abrasions of a minor nature, the patrol said.

Dr. Tribble was dead on arrival at the hospital. A Cape County Coroner’s jury ruled the death accidental at an inquest Friday night. Mr. Cable stated he did not see Dr. Tribble's vehicle until a split second before the impact when it appeared broadside in the southbound lane of traffic.

Dr. Tribble was one of four physicians, two medical doctors and two osteopaths, in Chaffee.

He had practiced medicine in Chaffee since August 1956. His patients numbered over 5,200 from Chaffee and surrounding communities. His office was located in a modern clinical type building on South Main constructed about three and a half years ago and was next to the local Post Office.

Dr. Tribble was born May 20, 1928 at West Plains, Missouri, a son of Mr. and Mrs. A.B. Tribble, who now reside at Hayti. He married Miss Suzanne Harper of Fort Worth, Texas on June 24, 1950. In addition to his widow and parents he is survived three sons, Robert E. Jr. (10), David M. (8), Thomas A. (6), and one daughter Nancy Katherine.

Dr. Tribble graduated from Hayti, Missouri High School and took his pre-medical work at Westminster College at Fulton, Missouri. He attended the University of Missouri School of Medicine for two years and received his Medical Degree from the University of Iowa Medical School at Iowa City, Iowa.

He interned at St. John’s Hospital in St. Louis, and entered the United States Air Force in September 1954 at Randolph AFB, Texas where he served as a Flight Surgeon for two years and was released as Captain.

The body was at the Bisplinghoff Funeral Home in Chaffee from Friday morning until Saturday afternoon when it was removed to the Chaffee High School Auditorium for funeral services, conducted by the Rev. Arthur England, Rector of Christ’s Episcopal Church at Cape Girardeau. He was assisted  by the Rev. Bill Ellis of the First Baptist Church of Chaffee.

Early Sunday morning the body was taken to Thayer, Missouri where a prayer service was conducted at 1 p.m. at the Leo Carr Funeral Home there.

Burial was in the family cemetery at Brandsville Missouri, near Thayer.

Pallbearers were William Herron and Max Bukstein of Cape, Dr. Bobby Tom Moudy, Karl von Kessel, Durwood Lawson and Robert H. Capshaw of Chaffee.

The honorary pallbearers were Doctors Freddie Rollins, Jean Chapman, Gerald Hoxworth, Wm O.L. Seabaugh, Frank Hall and John Crowe of Cape.

To the people who knew this man the above heading tells the meaning of his whole life. He was a devoted husband, a wonderful father to his four children, but first and foremost, he was a Medical Doctor in the true sense of the word.

From his earliest childhood he planned on being a part of the Medical Profession and constantly worked towards his goal. His parents fostered this ambition and did everything humanly possible throughout his life to help him in every way.

Dr. Tribble did not look or act the role of a professional man and probably this is one of the things that made him so dear to all who knew him. The day he departed from the Air Force as a Flight Surgeon with the rank of Captain, was the last day anyone ever saw him with a hat on his head. To him suit coats were a nuisance. he felt more comfortable wearing a flight jacket and everyone will miss seeing his “old blue one.”

Most doctors prefer to be addressed as “Doctor”-to him this did not mean a thing. One could call him “Doc” “Bob”, “Tribble” or anything that came naturally and it suited him just fine.

It was not unusual for him to treat 60 or 70 people in one day but regardless of how crowded his day was, he always gave the impression he had plenty of time for the individual to whom he was talking.

His humility only added to his stature. This was especially true in the hospital. A hospital orderly recently remarked “You made a mistake with most doctors and they made a big deal out of it; you made a mistake with Dr. Tribble and he will tell you about it later when just the two of you are alone and he almost apologizes when he tells you the mistake you made.” No wonder they all cried when they learned of his death, and no wonder a family he had treated for the past seven years asked after the accident” Would it be all right if we went to see “our doctor” we know we are not in his class but he was our doctor and we loved him.” What greater tribute can a man have!

Patience was also a virtue with him. No one ever saw him lose his composure or use profanity in the mildest terms. This was probably the reason why when he was himself a patient in a Cape hospital, every telephone operator in Cape signed his get well card he received from them. It took 24 hours to secure the signatures.

Everyone who knew Dr. Tribble worried for his safety in flying his personal plane which he used constantly. However, he was an expert pilot who regarded air travel the safest meant of transportation and this also afforded him a great deal of pleasure and relaxation.

We do not judge a book by the number of pages it contains, it is what is on the pages that counts. His number of years were 35 but how full they were. His life was short, but how good it was. Sunday was a bright, sunny day and we buried him in the family cemetery close to people who loved him dearly. Monday was drab and dreary and so it will be for many days to come but the brightness will come back for having known him.
